Reporting to the President, the Vice President Corporate is ultimately accountable for all corporate functions at Red Deer College including Human Resources, Marketing & Communications including corporate communications, and Strategic Planning & Analysis which are designed to meet the College’s mission and strategic directions. In addition, accountability for Community Relations (fund development, scholarships and awards, and alumni) will be transitioned to the Vice President Corporate during the 2018/2019 fiscal year. The Vice President Corporate provides leadership, strategic planning and senior management direction to ensure these corporate areas proactively meet the needs of the institution and their clients on a long-term basis.

The Vice President Corporate is a key senior executive member of the President’s Executive Committee reporting to the President. Other members of this Executive include the Vice President Academic, Vice President College Services, Vice President Enterprise & Community Relations, and the Director, Board & Corporate Relations.

The Vice President Corporate currently provides leadership to three (3) members of the Senior Leadership Team:

  • Director Human Resources
  • Director Marketing & Communications
  • Executive Director Strategic Planning & Analysis.

The Director of Community Relations will also report to the Vice President effective July 1, 2018.


Leadership and Planning
Provides leadership to the strategic planning and delivery of corporate activities to support the overall College mandate and mission. The Vice President Corporate will foster an environment where continuous reassessment and improvement of practices and outcomes is encouraged and valued all within a financially sustainable manner. The Vice President Corporate encourages initiative and the timely review and innovative and creative responses to new opportunities.

Corporate Standards & Innovation
The Vice President Corporate plays a significant role in leading the development, application and maintenance of strong corporate policies and standards specifically in the areas of current and best practices in human resources and people development, corporate branding and identity, corporate communication and fund development and stewardship.

Human Resource Planning and Development
Important responsibilities of this position relate to providing leadership in the establishment of behavioral expectations, promoting faculty and staff recruitment that aligns with those expectations, and the ongoing support of faculty and staff development and evaluation. The Vice President Corporate is responsible for ensuring a highly motivated and empowered team of directors and managers committed to a culture of excellence by fostering an atmosphere of open communication, collaboration, and constructive feedback.

Expanding Organizational Capacity for Fund Development
With increasing reliance on fundraising and revenue generation initiatives to support the College’s financial sustainability, this position will become responsible (2018/2019 and beyond) for further expanding organizational capacity for fund development through positive donor, business, industry and community partnerships and relationships.

Financial Resource Planning and Allocation
The Vice President Corporate plays a major role in the financial management of the College through sound strategic and financial planning as well as effective and judicious allocation of approved resources.

Enterprise Risk Management
Working with other senior leaders, the Vice President Corporate contributes to the reduction/mitigation of organizational risk by ensuring compliance across the College with corporate policies, collective agreements, legislative requirements such as the Post-Secondary Learning Act, Employment Standards, and the Human Rights Act as well as FOIPP and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

Internal and External Relations
The Vice President Corporate will provide leadership in facilitating and maintaining mutually supportive relationships promoting a partnering culture.


Balancing the varying demands of each corporate function and ensuring each area is provided with appropriate attention and focus will be a key challenge for the Vice President Corporate.



  • Minimum of a Master‘s Degree in Business Administration, Educational Administration or equivalent.
  • Professional accreditation in a related field; e.g. CPHR, CFP, CFPE would be an asset.


  • 10-15 years of experience in a senior-level corporate administrative position combined with an understanding of the public sector. Experience includes a background in strategic and operational planning and risk and resource management.
  • A minimum of 10 years of related progressively responsible experience managing a multi-faceted, multi-functional division and providing administrative leadership.
  • Collective agreement negotiations experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated previous success in community involvement/leadership.
  • Well-developed leadership capabilities in a highly complex and demanding environment.
  • Proven experience initiating and effectively leading change.
  • Excellent human resource management skills along with conflict resolution and facilitation experience.
  • Evidence based decision making.
  • Noted achievement as a strategic, innovative and results-oriented leader.
