DEEP MINING RESEARCH CHAIR / Part-time DEPUTY DIRECTOR

Swann Global, on behalf of Laurentian University, the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) and its supporting industrial partners, including the Ontario Government, is inviting applications from outstanding individuals for a Senior Research Chair in Mine Design and Planning, who will have part-time Deputy Director responsibilities for CEMI, an independent Research and Development corporation.  This research leadership position will be a tenured or tenure-track position at the Full Professor level and involve a reduced teaching load with a cross-appointment to CEMI, located on the Laurentian University campus.
Applicants should be internationally recognized researchers with interests in the broad area of research relevant to mining engineering and will be expected to provide research leadership, to secure funding to support research, supervise post-doctoral, postgraduate, and undergraduate research projects, and to disseminate research findings.  Applicants will be required to contribute to teaching across a range of undergraduate, graduate, and modular short course programs.
The successful candidate preferably brings a strong background in an engineering field relevant to one or more of the following or closely allied research areas:
·       Operations management in mine design & planning/scheduling & optimization;
·       Systems or process engineering or Operations Research
·       Risk assessment and management
·       Resource management
·       Monitoring and data collection technology & control systems
The Deputy Director (DD) at CEMI is expected to provide research leadership in specific technical areas and work with the President/CEO to continuously develop and expand CEMI. This position will be funded as a part-time secondment assignment to a Senior Research Chair funded by CEMI. Reporting directly to the President/CEO of CEMI, the incumbent will also be responsible for actively participating in the delivery of research in niche areas and developing and implementing strategic and tactical plans for CEMI. 
Candidates should have experience developing cohesive relationships with industry, academic institutions, and government and will work with outside research partners to develop applications for industry-focused Research and Development initiatives. Candidates should also have the ability to establish strong regional partnerships in support of the commercialization of CEMI innovations and to collaborate and establish alliances with other research centres towards the establishment of a national “Networks of Centres of Excellence” (NCE) in Mining, in addition to developing the rationale and funding support for other potential CEMI research initiatives. 
Successful candidates will have earned a doctoral degree in Mining, Mineral Process, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Geological Engineering and possess considerable experience at a high level in industry or research and bring innovative leadership experience. Candidates must have lead a senior management team, using an appropriate balance of decisiveness and collegiality while delegating important management assignments effectively, and assisting others to develop programs of research. Incumbent should be knowledgeable about attracting external funding through grants and contracts, and have a track record of recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent.
