The Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Associate Professor in the area of Bioethics and Health Systems. The expected start date is January 1, 2022.

The Division of Clinical Public Health seeks an exceptional leader and scholar with expertise in the discipline of bioethics. Candidates must have an excellent track record as an innovative scholar with an extensive record of excellence in research and academic publishing, teaching and program leadership. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of innovative scholarship in the field of bioethics with areas of special focus in health system and policy ethics, public and global health ethics, and ethics and governance of artificial intelligence and other emerging fields in public health. Experience in working with international, national or local health organizations is required.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a bioethics-related discipline with a strong foundation in the humanities by the time of appointment. Alternatively, the successful candidate will have a professional degree in health sciences or law (e.g. MD, JD) with graduate training in bioethics by the time of appointment. Candidates should have deep knowledge of both normative and empirical approaches used in bioethical research and will have extensive senior leadership experience working in policy/practice environments and in translating bioethics knowledge into policy and practice. Excellent communication and administrative skills and the demonstrated ability to work in a transdisciplinary environment are necessary. The successful candidate will be expected to significantly contribute to the Joint Centre for Bioethics.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference

In their cover letter, applicants are asked to specifically address the following: their vision for a research and education program that integrates with the current Dalla Lana School of Public Health academic plan, their experience in teaching bioethics and the courses they will develop as well as providing evidence of how their scholarship has had an impact on policies and practices in public health and health systems.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

It houses the Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation, the Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health, and the Joint Centre for Bioethics.

The Division of Clinical Public Health is unique and the only division of its kind in Canada. It consists of over 200 scholars from diverse disciplines dedicated to transforming the manner in which public health, population health and clinical services are understood and practised. The Division offers Masters of Public Health, Masters of Science in Community Health degrees and houses the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons accredited post graduate medical training program in Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
